Measuring Business Size & Family Businesses
The Strategic Comparator: Why Profit is NOT a Size Metric
1The Four Valid Measures of Size
Number of Employees
Total workforce headcount
Revenue (Turnover)
Total sales value per period
Capital Employed
Total investment in assets
Market Capitalisation
Share price × number of shares
⚠️THE PROFIT TRAP
CRITICAL: Profit is NOT a valid measure of business size. A massive company can make zero profit or even a loss while still being enormous by all other metrics. Amazon made losses for years while being one of the world's largest companies.
