The Strategic Question: What Do Managers Actually Believe?
Theory X Mindset
Core Belief: Workers are inherently lazy and dislike work
Motivation: Only money and fear of punishment drive performance
Management Style: Autocratic - tight control, constant supervision
Impact: Creates distrustful, demotivated workforce
Theory Y Mindset
Core Belief: Workers enjoy meaningful work and seek responsibility
Motivation: Intrinsic drive, achievement, personal growth
Management Style: Democratic/Laissez-faire - empowerment, autonomy
Impact: Creates engaged, high-performing teams
The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Trap
A Theory X manager who treats workers as lazy will CREATE lazy behavior through micromanagement and distrust. The manager then says "See! I was right!" - but THEY caused the problem. Theory Y breaks this cycle by treating workers as capable, which MAKES them capable.
Mintzberg's Managerial Roles Framework
Henry Mintzberg identified that managers don't just "plan, organize, lead, control" - they perform 10 specific roles across 3 categories:
👥 INTERPERSONAL
- • Figurehead
- • Leader
- • Liaison
📊 INFORMATIONAL
- • Monitor
- • Disseminator
- • Spokesperson
⚡ DECISIONAL
- • Entrepreneur
- • Disturbance Handler
- • Resource Allocator
- • Negotiator
