Lesson 1.3 · Systems of Linear Equations
On the test: 2–4 questions a test; many are 30-second questions if you spot the shortcut
Big idea. A system is two (or more) equations that must be true AT THE SAME TIME. Each linear equation is a line, so the solution is the point that sits on both lines — where they cross. Every method (substitution, elimination, graphing) is just a way of finding that crossing point.
🎛 Move it · two lines, one crossing
Each side here is one line of a system and . The gold point is the solution: the one that makes BOTH equations true.
2x + 1 = 2x + 4
Same x-number, different constants → parallel lines that never meet → NO solution.

the meaning
One equation alone has infinitely many solutions (every point on its line). The second equation narrows it down to the points on BOTH lines.

why it is allowed
Equal amounts added to equal amounts stay equal — two balanced scales poured onto one scale still balance.

substitution
If one equation is already solved for a letter (or has a letter with coefficient 1), substitute.
Take with you
- ▸A solution of a system is the point on EVERY graph — where the lines cross.
- ▸One letter given? Substitute it. Both “”? Set them equal.
- ▸Elimination: make one letter’s numbers opposites (multiply every term), then add. Always check first whether adding/subtracting as-is gives what is asked.
- ▸Ratios vs vs : different → one; same left, different right → none; all same → infinitely many.
- ▸“For each ” → the two equations are the same line; plug into the options and test.
- ▸Words: one equation per fact (total + ingredient, or one per purchase). Line meets curve: substitute and count, or count crossings on the graph.
