Lesson 3.2 · Unit Conversion
On the test: about 1 question a test — always solvable by writing the units down
Big idea. A conversion factor like 1 mile / 1609 m is a fraction equal to 1 (top and bottom are the same length). Multiplying by 1 never changes a quantity — it only changes its units. So write the factor the way up that makes the unwanted unit cancel, top against bottom.

An object traveled 30 miles in 2 hours. Average speed in mph?
(type the answer)
speed

🎛 Move it · cancel the units
Flip each factor until only the units you want are left. A squared unit needs its factor TWICE.
Tap a fraction to flip it. Each one equals 1, so flipping never changes the size — only which units cancel.
Units left: mi min^2⁻ ✓ = mi/min². Value ≈ 15.214

Take with you
- ▸Every conversion factor equals 1; write it so the unwanted unit cancels top-against-bottom.
- ▸A squared (cubed) unit needs its factor 2 (3) times.
- ▸Rates: keep units in the fraction — “gallons per square foot” is gallons ÷ ft².
- ▸Volume = mass ÷ density; convert every length to the target unit before multiplying.
