Topic 10.1 Part 3
Antigens & Antibodies: The Lock and Key Defense
Supplement Content: The specific immune response depends on shape complementarity between antigens and antibodies.
What Are Antigens?
Definition: Antigens are unique chemical shapes on the surface of every pathogen.
Key Fact: Each type of pathogen (bacteria, virus, fungus) has its own distinctive antigen pattern.
Function: These shapes act like "ID badges" that identify the pathogen as non-self (foreign).
What Are Antibodies?
Definition: Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins made by Lymphocytes.
Structure: The tips of the "Y" have a specific shape that matches one type of antigen.
Production: Each lymphocyte produces antibodies for one specific antigen only.
The Lock and Key Rule
Antibodies have a COMPLEMENTARY SHAPE to the antigen.
This means:
- Specific binding: Only the correct antibody fits the antigen (like a key in a lock)
- Precision: Triangle antigens need triangle antibodies, not square ones
- One-to-one: Each antibody type targets ONE pathogen type
How Antibodies Destroy Pathogens
1. Direct Destruction
Antibodies bind to the pathogen and cause it to burst (lyse).
2. Marking for Destruction (Agglutination)
Antibodies cause pathogens to clump together, making them easier for Phagocytes to find and engulf.
Phagocytosis Recap
Remember: Phagocytes are white blood cells that engulf and digest pathogens.
How it works: The phagocyte surrounds the pathogen, takes it inside, and breaks it down with enzymes.
Connection: Antibodies make phagocytosis MORE EFFICIENT by grouping pathogens together.
🎯 Key Takeaways: Antigens & Antibodies
✓ Antigens
Unique chemical shapes on pathogen surfaces that identify them as "non-self"
✓ Antibodies
Y-shaped proteins made by lymphocytes with complementary shapes to antigens
✓ Specificity
Each antibody only binds to ONE type of antigen (like a lock and key)
✓ Agglutination
Antibodies clump pathogens together, making phagocytosis more efficient
