Germination Conditions
Limitless Exam · 15 Questions · Paper 2 / 3 / 6
Which of the following is the correct list of conditions required for seed germination?
A student stores seeds in a dry, sealed, cold container. Which condition is preventing germination?
Which gas is essential for seed germination?
State THREE environmental conditions required for the germination of seeds. [3]
A seed is placed in darkness, given water, and kept at 25°C. Oxygen is available. What is the most likely outcome?
A student places seeds in a dark cupboard with warm water and oxygen available. A classmate says 'The seeds will not germinate because there is no light.' Is the classmate correct?
A student claims that seeds need light to germinate. Explain why this claim is incorrect, and state what seeds use as an energy source during germination. [3]
Why do seeds NOT require light for germination?
Seeds placed in a dark, warm, moist container with adequate oxygen germinate successfully. Explain why the absence of light does not prevent germination. [2]
Evaluate the following student statement: 'A seed planted 10 cm underground cannot germinate because no sunlight can reach it.' [2]
Explain why oxygen is necessary for the germination of seeds. [3]
Explain why a suitable temperature is required for seed germination. [3]
A student investigates the effect of temperature on seed germination. She places 20 seeds in each of five Petri dishes with damp cotton wool. Each dish is kept at a different temperature: 5°C, 15°C, 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C. She counts germinated seeds after 7 days. (a) Identify ONE independent variable and ONE dependent variable. [2] (b) State TWO variables that must be kept constant. [2]
The student's results show that seeds at 5°C and 45°C did not germinate, while seeds at 25°C showed the most germination. Explain these results using your knowledge of enzymes. [3]
A student wants to investigate whether water is necessary for seed germination. Describe a suitable experiment, including the control, how to make it a fair test, and the expected result. [4]
⚠️ The #1 Examiner Trap: LIGHT
Seeds do NOT need light to germinate. The three conditions are: water, oxygen, and suitable temperature — ONLY. Writing "light" as a condition earns ZERO marks. Light is needed for photosynthesis, which happens AFTER germination when the seedling produces leaves.
