⚡ Aluminium Extraction & The Cryolite Secret
Why does the world's most abundant metal cost so much to produce — and how does one bizarre mineral save billions?
🪨 The Ore: Bauxite
Aluminium is the most abundant metal in Earth's crust, but it never occurs free. It hides inside a reddish rock called Bauxite. Bauxite is purified to give us Aluminium Oxide (Al₂O₃) — also called alumina. That's our starting material for electrolysis.
☕ The Sugar-in-Coffee Analogy
Trying to melt a sugar cube with a lighter takes enormous heat. Similarly, melting pure Al₂O₃ requires ~2000°C — an insane amount of energy.
Drop the sugar cube in hot coffee — it dissolves at a much lower temperature! Cryolite dissolves Al₂O₃, dropping the operating temperature to ~900°C.

⚡ ANODE (Graphite, +)
O²⁻ ions are oxidised → O₂ gas is produced. The graphite slowly burns away and must be replaced regularly. This adds to production costs.
⚡ CATHODE (Graphite-lined Steel, −)
Al³⁺ ions are reduced → liquid aluminium forms and sinks to the bottom (denser than the melt). Tapped off periodically.
