Two toxic enemies. One platinum peacemaker. A redox reaction that saves lives.
🔥 The Hostile Room
In normal air, nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂) completely ignore each other at room temperature. They are stable, non-reactive gases. But inside a car engine, temperatures reach over 1000°C with intense pressure.
It's like two strangers who normally avoid each other — until they're thrown into a tiny, violently hot room and forced together. They bond against their will, forming NO — nitrogen monoxide, a toxic pollutant.
Two toxic products leave the engine:
CO — Carbon Monoxide
From incomplete combustion of petrol. Binds to haemoglobin in blood — prevents oxygen transport. Colourless, odourless, lethal.
NO — Nitrogen Monoxide
From N₂ + O₂ in air reacting under extreme heat. Converts to NO₂ in air → acid rain. Respiratory irritant.
