⚡ Topic 2.4.1: The Ion Transformation
"The Quest for the Full Outer Shell"
📖The Atomic Story
Every atom has a dream: to have a full outer shell like the noble gases. Metals have a few extra electrons that annoy them, so they LOSE them to become positive ions (cations). Non-metals are missing a few electrons, so they GAIN them to become negative ions (anions). It's all about achieving that perfect, stable configuration!
Choose Your Element
🎭The Analogy
Has an annoying backpack (1 electron) - wants to throw it away!
Sodium is that person who packs too light but still has one extra thing. Time to ditch it.
⚗️The Ionizer Machine
🏷️The Naming Game: -IDE Rule
When non-metals become negative ions (anions), they change their name ending to -IDE
⚠️ Metal Ions: Keep their original name + "ion" (e.g., Sodium Ion, Magnesium Ion)
🎯Exam-Ready Summary
🔴 CATIONS (Positive Ions)
- ✓ Formed by METALS
- ✓ LOSE electrons from outer shell
- ✓ More protons than electrons
- ✓ Examples: Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺
- ✓ Keep original name + "ion"
🔵 ANIONS (Negative Ions)
- ✓ Formed by NON-METALS
- ✓ GAIN electrons to outer shell
- ✓ More electrons than protons
- ✓ Examples: Cl⁻, O²⁻, N³⁻
- ✓ Name changes to end in "-ide"
⚠️ EXAMINER TRAPS
- ❌ Don't say "ions are charged atoms" - say WHY they're charged
- ❌ Don't confuse electron configuration with charge
- ❌ Don't forget the naming rule: non-metal ions end in -ide
- ✅ Always show your working: "Na loses 1e⁻ → 11p⁺, 10e⁻ → +1 charge"
