🔬 Chemical Tests for Water
The Invisible Ink Protocol — Two powders that reveal water's secret presence
The Detective's Briefing
A mysterious colourless liquid has arrived at your lab. Is it water? Contaminated water? You can't tell just by looking. Your mission: use two special "indicator powders" that act like invisible ink — completely lifeless on their own, but they burst into colour the moment water molecules touch them.
⚠️ These aren't magic — it's chemistry. Water molecules physically insert themselves into the crystal structure, changing how electrons interact with light and shifting the colour we see.
⚡ The Examiner's Trap: The "Anhydrous" Key Word
Before you test anything — you must choose the RIGHT reagent. One wrong choice will give you ZERO results and ZERO marks. Click what you would use to test for water:

🔬 The Invisible Ink — Why It Actually Works
Like invisible ink waking up — the dry white powder has empty 'water-shaped' gaps in its crystal structure. When water molecules slot in, they change how light reflects — revealing deep blue!
The cobalt ion acts like a mood ring — it changes colour depending on how many water molecules are bonded around it. Dry = blue (4-coordinate), wet = pink (6-coordinate, octahedral complex).
📋 Examiner's Gold Standard Summary
| Reagent | Start Colour | End Colour | MUST say... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anhydrous CuSO₄ | White | Blue | "Anhydrous" — essential keyword |
| Anhydrous CoCl₂ | Blue | Pink | "Pink" not "red" — exact word matters |
⚠️ EXAMINER TRAPS — Most Common Errors:
- • Writing "Copper Sulfate" without "ANHYDROUS" → 0 marks
- • Writing CoCl₂ paper turns "red" instead of "PINK" → 0 marks
- • Claiming the test proves the liquid IS pure water → incorrect conclusion
- • Using hydrated salts (already coloured) and expecting a colour change → fails
