Topic 10.1.7 · Core🏭 The Water Treatment Plant
Three Security Guards stand between you and a glass of cholera. Let's meet them.
Brown, murky river water enters the plant. It contains mud, sand, bacteria, and dissolved chemicals that cause bad taste and odour.
❌ Mud/Sand
❌ Bacteria
❌ Taste/Odour
The Three Security Guards
🕸️Guard 1 — The Net
Sedimentation & Filtration → Removes: Insoluble solids (mud, sand)
🧽Guard 2 — The Sponge
Activated Carbon → Removes: Dissolved taste & odour chemicals
🎯Guard 3 — The Sniper
Chlorination → Removes: Harmful microbes & bacteria
⚠️ EXAMINER TRAP — DON'T LOSE MARKS:
- ❌ "Filtration removes bacteria" → WRONG. Filtration only removes insoluble solid particles.
- ❌ "Chlorine purifies water" → WRONG. Chlorine sterilises/disinfects — it kills bacteria, it does NOT make water chemically pure.
- ❌ "Tap water is H₂O" → WRONG. Tap water is a mixture, not a pure substance.
