2.3.3-2.3.4 Thermal Radiation & Applications
Core + Supplement | Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625
🔥 The Hook: Why Do Space Heaters Glow Red?
Stand near a bonfire and you feel warm WITHOUT touching the flames. The heat travels through empty air to your skin. But how? There's no solid material connecting you to the fire. This is thermal radiation - the invisible infrared waves that carry heat energy through NOTHING at all, even the vacuum of space.
Real World: The Sun heats Earth across 150 million km of empty space. Solar panels on satellites absorb radiation. Firefighters' reflective suits reject infrared waves. ALL use the same physics we're learning today.
🎯 The Why: Master Heat Transfer Mode #3
You've learned:
- Conduction (2.3.1): Heat through solids by vibrating particles
- Convection (2.3.2): Heat through fluids by moving currents
Now we complete the trio with Radiation - the ONLY method that works in a vacuum. This explains:
👶 Baby Steps: What IS Radiation?
Thermal radiation is the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves, specifically infrared (IR) waves.
Think of it like radio waves or light waves, but carrying heat instead of music or brightness. IR waves are invisible to our eyes but our skin detects them as warmth.
Unlike conduction (needs solid contact) or convection (needs fluid particles), radiation requires NO MEDIUM. It travels through:
- Air ✓
- Water ✓
- Glass ✓
- Complete vacuum (empty space) ✓✓✓ ← KEY EXAM POINT
EVERY object above absolute zero (-273°C) emits infrared radiation. Hotter objects emit MORE radiation. Your body right now is glowing in infrared (night vision cameras see this). Ice cubes radiate too, just less.
📊 Visual Clarification: Radiation Spectrum
Exam Tip: If asked "Why can the Sun heat Earth?", answer "Infrared radiation can travel through the vacuum of space." Do NOT say "heat waves" - that's not scientific terminology.
🔬 Deep Theory: Surface Properties [CORE + SUPPLEMENT]
Black surfaces have a rough, dull texture at microscopic level. Infrared waves enter the tiny pits and get trapped, absorbed into the material's internal energy. Think of black as a "radiation sponge."
Shiny surfaces are smooth at microscopic level. Infrared waves bounce off like a mirror instead of being absorbed. This is why survival blankets are shiny silver - they reflect your body heat back to you.
This is a fundamental law of physics. The same surface structure that traps incoming radiation ALSO allows internal heat energy to escape easily as radiation.
Example: A black car absorbs sunlight quickly (heats up fast in summer). But it ALSO emits radiation quickly (cools down fast at night). A white car does both processes slowly.
🧪 Virtual Lab: The Leslie Cube Experiment
A Leslie Cube is a hollow metal cube filled with hot water. Each face has a DIFFERENT surface finish. Move the infrared detector around to measure radiation emitted from each surface.
Q: "Which surface of the Leslie Cube emits the MOST infrared radiation?"
Mark Scheme Answer: The matte black surface. (1 mark for "black", lose mark if you write "dark" or "rough")
Q: "Explain why all four surfaces are at the same temperature but emit different amounts of radiation."
Mark Scheme Answer: The cube contains hot water at uniform temperature (1 mark), but different surface finishes emit radiation at different rates (1 mark). Black surfaces are better emitters than shiny surfaces (1 mark).
⚖️ Thermal Equilibrium [SUPPLEMENT]
Absorption Rate > Emission Rate → Temperature INCREASES
Example: Black car in summer sunlight. It absorbs solar radiation faster than it emits heat away.
Absorption Rate = Emission Rate → Temperature CONSTANT
Example: Earth's average temperature. We absorb solar energy and emit infrared at equal rates.
Absorption Rate < Emission Rate → Temperature DECREASES
Example: Hot coffee in a room. It emits radiation faster than it absorbs from surroundings.
🚗 Application: The Car Radiator [SUPPLEMENT - EXAM FAVORITE]
The car radiator is the PERFECT exam question because it combines all THREE heat transfer methods. Hover over each part to learn how it works.
Q: "Describe how heat energy from the engine is transferred to the surrounding air." [6 marks]
MARK SCHEME (6 marks total):
- Conduction through the metal walls of the engine block (1 mark)
- Heat transfers from hot metal to the water/coolant (1 mark)
- Convection currents in the water carry hot water to the radiator (1 mark)
- Conduction through the radiator fins (1 mark)
- Radiation from the black-painted fins to surroundings (1 mark)
- Convection in air - warm air rises away from fins (1 mark)
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKES (lose marks):
- Saying "heat flows" instead of naming the METHOD (conduction/convection/radiation)
- Writing "hot air" without explaining convection current
- Forgetting that black fins emit radiation (many students only mention conduction)
- Not specifying WHERE each method occurs (e.g., "radiation in the fins")
The fins are painted matte black because black is the best emitter of infrared radiation. This maximizes heat loss to the surrounding air.
If painted shiny silver: The fins would REFLECT radiation back instead of emitting it. The engine would overheat. ❌
If painted matte white: Better than silver, but still not as effective as black for emission. ⚠️
⚠️ Examiner's Traps
Wrong: "Heat travels by heat waves."
Correct: "Heat is transferred by infrared radiation (electromagnetic waves)."
"Heat waves" is casual language, not physics terminology. Always say "infrared" or "IR radiation."
Many students remember "black absorbs best" but forget "black ALSO emits best."
Remember: Good absorbers are ALWAYS good emitters. Good reflectors are ALWAYS bad emitters.
Wrong: "The Sun heats Earth through the air."
Correct: "The Sun heats Earth by infrared radiation through the vacuum of space. Radiation does NOT need a medium."
Wrong: "At equilibrium, the object stops emitting radiation."
Correct: "At equilibrium, the object emits radiation at the SAME RATE it absorbs it. Both processes continue, but balance out."
Students often describe only 1 or 2 heat transfer methods in the radiator, missing marks.
Complete Answer Template: "Heat transfers by conduction through metal walls, convection in the water and air, and radiation from the black fins." (All 3 methods = full marks)
