6.2.5 Redshift & The Expanding Universe
Evidence for the Big Bang Theory
🎯 The Hook: The Siren Effect
Have you ever noticed how an ambulance siren sounds higher-pitched when it's coming toward you, and lower-pitched when it's moving away? This is called the Doppler Effect.
Astronomers discovered that light from distant galaxies behaves exactly the same way. When a galaxy moves away from us, its light gets "stretched" to longer wavelengths, shifting toward the red end of the spectrum. This is called Redshift.
Real-World Connection:
Police use the Doppler Effect with radar guns to catch speeding cars. Astronomers use it to measure how fast galaxies are racing away from us!
🤔 Why Does This Matter?
Redshift is the smoking gun evidence for the Big Bang Theory. Here's the logic chain:
We observe that all distant galaxies show redshift.
Redshift means they're all moving away from us.
If everything is moving apart now, they must have been closer together in the past.
Rewind far enough, and everything was at a single point: The Big Bang!
👶 Baby Steps: Understanding Redshift
Phase 1: What is Light?
Light is an electromagnetic wave with a specific wavelength. Different wavelengths appear as different colors:
Phase 2: What Happens When a Source Moves?
If the source is stationary: Waves spread out evenly in all directions.
If the source moves away: Waves get "stretched" (longer wavelength = redder).
If the source moves toward you: Waves get "compressed" (shorter wavelength = bluer).
Phase 3: Galaxy Redshift
When we analyze light from distant galaxies using a spectrometer, we see characteristic dark lines (absorption lines). These lines are shifted toward the red end compared to lab reference spectra. This proves the galaxies are moving away from us.
🎮 Interactive Simulation 1: Doppler Effect
Galaxy Motion:
Observation: Waves spread evenly. Wavelength = normal (blue light).
🎈 Interactive Simulation 2: The Balloon Analogy
Imagine the universe as the surface of a balloon, with galaxies as dots on that surface. As the balloon inflates, every dot moves away from every other dot. There's no "center" of the expansion!
Key Insight: As you increase balloon size, all galaxies move away from us AND from each other. This matches observations: the universe has no center, it's expanding everywhere!
🔬 Interactive Simulation 3: Spectrum Analyzer
Scientists use spectroscopy to measure redshift. Drag the galaxy spectrum to match it with the lab reference. The amount of shift tells us the galaxy's velocity!
Lab Reference Spectrum (Stationary Source):
Galaxy Spectrum (Adjust to Match):
📐 Deep Theory: The Mathematics (Supplement)
Key Definitions:
Redshift: The observed increase in wavelength of light from a receding source.
Wavelength (λ): The distance between consecutive wave peaks, measured in nanometers (nm) for visible light.
Velocity (v): Speed of the galaxy moving away from Earth, measured in km/s or m/s.
Redshift Equation (Supplement):
v/c = Δλ/λ
Where:
• v = velocity of galaxy (m/s)
• c = speed of light (3 × 10⁸ m/s)
• Δλ = change in wavelength (nm)
• λ = original wavelength (nm)
The Milky Way (Core):
Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has a diameter of approximately 100,000 light-years. That's the distance light travels in 100,000 years!
Hubble's Discovery:
Edwin Hubble discovered that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it's moving away from us. This relationship (Hubble's Law) supports the Big Bang Theory.
⚠️ Examiner Traps: What Students Get Wrong
❌ TRAP 1: "Galaxies are moving through space"
Correction: Galaxies aren't moving "through" space like cars on a highway. Space itself is expanding, carrying galaxies with it. The balloon analogy shows this perfectly!
❌ TRAP 2: "Redshift means galaxies are getting redder"
Correction: Redshift doesn't mean the galaxy looks red! It means the spectral lines shift toward the red end of the spectrum. A blue line might shift to green, or green to yellow.
❌ TRAP 3: "The Big Bang happened at a specific location"
Correction: The Big Bang happened everywhere at once. There's no "center" of the universe. Every point in space was part of the initial singularity.
❌ TRAP 4: Confusing wavelength with frequency
Mark Scheme Keyword: When wavelength increases, frequency decreases. They are inversely proportional (c = fλ).
✅ Syllabus Checklist
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Core: State that the Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light-years in diameter.
Core: Describe redshift as an observed increase in wavelength from distant galaxies.
Core: Explain that the light is shifted to the red end of the spectrum.
Core: Use redshift as evidence that galaxies are moving away from Earth.
Core: Describe how the Big Bang theory is supported by the observation that galaxies are moving apart.
Supplement: Understand that the velocity of galaxies can be determined from the change in wavelength.
🔑 Quick Summary
Redshift is the stretching of light wavelengths from galaxies moving away from us. The spectral lines shift toward the red end of the spectrum. This universal observation proves that space is expanding, which supports the Big Bang Theory that the universe began from a single point approximately 13.8 billion years ago. The farther away a galaxy, the greater its redshift and the faster it's receding.
