Scalars vs Vectors
Syllabus: 1.1.4, 1.1.5, 1.1.6 | Core Content
🚁 THE PILOT'S ERROR
A rescue helicopter flies at 500 km/h for exactly 1 hour. The control tower says: "Perfect! You've reached the crash site." But when the pilot looks down... nothing. Empty ocean.
The problem? The tower only told them the SPEED, not the DIRECTION.
In physics, some quantities need direction to be meaningful. Others don't. This distinction is life-or-death important.
The Definitions
📏 SCALAR Quantity
A quantity with MAGNITUDE only
Magnitude = Size or Amount
No direction needed!
Examples: 5 kg, 10 s, 25°C
🎯 VECTOR Quantity
A quantity with MAGNITUDE and DIRECTION
Magnitude = How much
Direction = Which way
Examples: 10 N downwards, 50 m/s North
⚠️ EXAMINER'S TRAP: Students often confuse Speed (scalar) with Velocity (vector). Speed is just "how fast" - velocity is "how fast AND which way".
The Walk Analogy
Imagine walking from your house (A) to school (B). You take a wiggly path, going around obstacles:
DISTANCE (Scalar)
= Total length of path traveled
= 420 m
No direction - just a number!
DISPLACEMENT (Vector)
= Straight line from start to finish
= 325 m East
Has direction - magnitude AND way!
Deep Theory: The Mark Scheme Keywords
Examiner Definition (Learn these EXACT words):
- • Scalar: A quantity that has magnitude only
- • Vector: A quantity that has magnitude and direction
Why This Matters in Exams:
In Paper 4, if you're asked "Define a vector quantity" and you say "Something with direction" → 0 marks
But if you say "A quantity that has magnitude and direction" → Full marks
Syllabus Examples (1.1.6)
| SCALARS | VECTORS |
|---|---|
| Distance How far (no direction) | Displacement How far + which way |
| Speed How fast (no direction) | Velocity How fast + which way |
| Mass, Time, Energy, Temperature No direction possible | Force, Weight, Acceleration, Momentum Direction is essential |

⚠️ THE EXAMINER'S TRAPS
TRAP 1: Speed vs Velocity
A car doing 60 mph has SPEED = 60 mph (scalar). But if it's going North, VELOCITY = 60 mph North (vector).
In exams: "A car travels at 30 m/s" → That's speed. "A car travels at 30 m/s East" → That's velocity.
TRAP 2: Weight is NOT Mass
Mass = scalar (5 kg). Weight = vector (50 N downwards) because it's a FORCE.
TRAP 3: Distance vs Displacement
Walk in a circle back to start: Distance = circumference (scalar), Displacement = 0 (you're back where you started).
