Which planet is located between Mars and Saturn in our Solar System?
What is the shape of planetary orbits around the Sun?
Why do outer planets (like Neptune) orbit the Sun more slowly than inner planets (like Mercury)?
The Sun contains most of the mass of the Solar System. What does this explain?
According to the accretion model, why are the four inner planets rocky while the four outer planets are gaseous?
Exam Tips for Solar System Questions:
⚠️ Examiner Trap 1: Don't confuse "elliptical orbit" with "circular orbit." Orbits are elliptical with the Sun NOT at the center (except when approximately circular).
⚠️ Examiner Trap 2: When explaining why inner planets are rocky, mention TEMPERATURE and the frost line, not just "they're smaller."
⚠️ Examiner Trap 3: For energy questions with comets/elliptical orbits, state BOTH: GPE decreases AND KE increases AND total energy is conserved.
⚠️ Examiner Trap 4: "Gravitational field strength" decreases with distance - this affects BOTH surface gravity and orbital speed. Be specific which one you're discussing.
⚠️ Examiner Trap 5: The Sun contains MOST of the Solar System's mass - this is WHY planets orbit it. Don't just state facts; show the causal link.
Formula Triangle: For orbital speed v = 2πr/T, remember: r is RADIUS (distance from Sun), T is PERIOD (time for one orbit). Both must be in SI units!
