The Sun, Nuclear Fusion & Light-Years
Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 | Space Physics
🌟 The Hook: Why Doesn't the Sun Burn Out?
You've left a candle burning for 5 hours and it melts away. But the Sun has been shining for 4.6 BILLION years and shows no signs of stopping. What's different? The Sun isn't "burning" like a fire. It's doing something far more powerful: Nuclear Fusion.
📚 The Core Facts (What the Syllabus Says)
CORE Knowledge:
- •The Sun is a medium-sized star
- •Composition: Mostly Hydrogen (~73%) and Helium (~25%)
- •Radiates energy in three main regions of the electromagnetic spectrum:
SUPPLEMENT Knowledge:
- •The Sun is powered by Nuclear Fusion
- •Process: Hydrogen nuclei fuse together to form Helium + Energy
- •This is the same process that powers hydrogen bombs (but controlled in stars)
🎯 Baby Steps: How Nuclear Fusion Works
The Setup: Extreme Conditions
The Sun's core is INCREDIBLY hot (15 million °C) and has CRUSHING pressure. This is needed because hydrogen nuclei (protons) are both positively chargedand naturally repel each other.
The Collision: Overcoming Repulsion
At these extreme temperatures, hydrogen nuclei move SO FAST that they can overcome the electrical repulsion and get close enough for the strong nuclear forceto pull them together.
The Fusion: Four Become One
Four hydrogen nuclei (protons) fuse together to create one helium nucleus (2 protons + 2 neutrons). But here's the KEY: The helium nucleus has slightly less mass than the four hydrogen nuclei combined.
The Energy Release: E = mc²
The "missing mass" doesn't just disappear. It converts into a HUGE amount of energy according to Einstein's famous equation. This energy is released as light, heat, and other radiation.
Think of it like this:
Imagine you have 4 Lego bricks (hydrogen). When you snap them together to make a structure (helium), a tiny piece of plastic "disappears" and turns into light and heat. That tiny bit of mass releases MASSIVE energy because the speed of light (c) is HUGE, and it's squared in the equation!

🌌 Understanding Cosmic Scale
The Sun isn't alone. It's part of a galaxy called the Milky Way, which contains billions of other stars. To measure these vast distances, we use a special unit called a light-year.
What is a Light-Year?
A light-year is the distance that light travels through the vacuum of space in one year.
1 light-year = 9.5 × 10¹⁵ m
(That's 9,500,000,000,000,000 meters!)
Important Clarification:
A light-year is a measure of DISTANCE, not time! It's like saying "a marathon distance" (42.2 km). It tells you how far, not how long.
🔭 Interactive Lab 2: Cosmic Zoom
Slide to zoom out from Earth and see how the Sun fits into the bigger picture of the Milky Way galaxy.
You are here! The Sun looks HUGE from Earth.
🧮 Interactive Lab 3: Light-Year Calculator
Calculate the actual distance in meters that light travels in a given number of years.
Real Context:
- • The nearest star (Proxima Centauri) is 4.2 light-years away
- • The Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years across
- • The Andromeda Galaxy is 2.5 MILLION light-years away!
⚠️ Examiner's Traps
TRAP 1: "The Sun burns hydrogen"
❌ Wrong! The Sun doesn't "burn" in the chemical sense (no oxygen, no combustion).
✅ Correct: The Sun undergoes nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium.
TRAP 2: "Light-year is a unit of time"
❌ Wrong! The word "year" is misleading.
✅ Correct: A light-year is a unit of DISTANCE(how far light travels in one year).
TRAP 3: Mixing up the spectrum
❌ Common mistake: "The Sun only emits visible light"
✅ Correct: The Sun radiates energy across the spectrum, but MOST energy is in infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet regions.
TRAP 4: "Mass disappears in fusion"
❌ Wrong thinking! Mass doesn't just vanish.
✅ Correct: Mass is converted into energy according to E = mc². The total mass-energy is conserved!
✅ Syllabus Checklist
Can you now:
🎓 Key Takeaways
- • The Sun is powered by nuclear fusion, not chemical burning
- • Fusion converts hydrogen into helium, with mass transforming into enormous energy
- • The Sun radiates across the spectrum: IR (heat), visible (light), and UV
- • A light-year is a DISTANCE unit (9.5 × 10¹⁵ m), not a time measurement
- • The Sun is just one of 200+ billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy
